Negative Step, for those that follow me @gkmanual and those who are coached by me, is a bit of a pet hate of mine, so I thought with the World Cup upon us and the eyes of the world on it and the mistakes that goalkeepers make, I would write a blog about it to explain my reasons why.

I expect this may upset a few exponents of the Negative Step and that this is just my opinion backed up by some examples and facts. If you disagree please comment with the same and be constructive.

Let’s do a little explanation and experiment.

Put a ball down on floor say 4 steps from your body.

Now let me explain a “power step”

1. Stand with feet shoulder width apart.

2. Now step with one foot away from  your body towards the ball and slightly in front.

3. That is called the power step.

So it is NPL (National Premier League) Registration Day today in Victoria and there is a panic for young and older goalkeepers in Victoria to fill spots and I'm left asking the question. Why?  And, is this the same in Australia and Worldwide.

How do I know there is a panic? Well I run a Goalkeeper Facebook Group for Goalkeepers  and through it I get contacted regularly by coaches of other clubs or goalkeepers looking for players or clubs. Today and last night was seriously busy.

So as a Goalkeeper Coach I'm guilty, I used to be a bit of a drill instructor 'Yes' 'Right' Left' basically telling my goalkeeper when and where to move. You probably are one or have one as a coach now,  But now I have seen the light and want to share with you some tweaks to try in your coaching.

Goalkeeper Angles where do we start. To me, along with set position, angles or some refer to it as start position, are the most crucial aspect of goalkeeping and so many goalkeepers get it wrong so this blog is my opinion on the current state of angles.

So the basic way to describe what angles are is the protractor reference see below. If we stand in the middle of the goal and the ball is right in front of us (90 degrees) then we are on angle.

The Goalkeeper Set or Ready position that we have been taught in goalkeeper courses and for me is one of the most important aspects of goalkeeping is dead in the Top Level Football like the English Premier League, La Liga etc and I have the proof, but I want to know why? And Please can we bring it back Goalkeeper Coaches?

The set we are taught, I'm talking about hand position, for me is the most important weapon we have as goalkeepers.

So after seeing the rebound boxes online in the UK and due to the fact that I don't think they are imported here, I decided to build one.

In the 1st 6 months of 2015 I was training 1 on 1 sessions with an 18 year old goalkeeper from Geelong called Dylan Nikolovski. In mid year he was at the stage where he was ready to go overseas and trial for a professional contract. He achieved that and was back in Melbourne over Christmas were we caught up for a few sessions and chat about his 1st 6 months and how being a Pro Footballer is not the glamour you expect.

So tell us how your trials came about overseas.

So I have just been motivated to write this blog by a blog by Sean DArcy on players playing in goal for convenience rather than because of want and his club policy of no permanent goalkeepers until Age 11.

This topic of course is controversial and led by the governing body, but here are my opinions & experiences. First question.

1. When should a goalkeeper play permanatly in goal?

Whenever he wants and what age he wants?

Why are we putting restrictions on such a specialized position.

So some of you may think this is the most random most pointless piece of research into goalkeeping and I wasn't sure where it would head when I started doing it, but the results are in and the results will shock and surprise the majority of people out there. There is a distinct link between when you are born and if you are a Top Goalkeeper or not!!

Now firstly let me explain why I came up with this research in the 1st place.
